Sunset Plaza Drive, but Clayton wasn't prepared to move out for a week, and Jimmy was supposed to be out within three days.

The day inevitably came when the studio security chief came by Orr's office and stated, "I have orders to move Dean off the lot now." Orr bought more time with a fib, claiming he'd spoken with the boss (J.L.), who had okayed it for Jimmy to remain just a few more days.

When J.L. found out what had happened he subjected Orr to a terrific bawling out. Orr explained that he was trying to make a deal with Jimmy for future pictures.

When Jimmy showed up on the lot the following day he found all his luggage and clothes piled up and waiting for him at the gate. He asked permission to go into his dressing room for a moment. The room was nearly bare, but he went over to a vase on a shelf, reached into it, and pulled out a wad of bills, several thousand dollars. He'd been keeping his money in the vase because he still hadn't opened a bank account in Los Angeles and still relied on Jane Deacy for his allowance.

Jimmy never willingly spoke to Orr again. For his part, J.L. never said another word about the matter. His attitude was that he was the guy who had fired Clark Gable, and if that wasn't enough to make his position clear, he'd point up at the water tower, on which was stenciled warner studios, and ask whose name was on it.

With his books and bongos, bullfight paraphernalia, and stacks of photographs of Pier—and of himself—Jimmy moved into Dick Clayton's small apartment on Sunset Plaza Drive. He wasn't pleased with the place, however, and was soon calling it his "waste-basket with walls." It was an accurate description.

Dick Clayton arranged for Jimmy to take Terry Moore, a bosomy young starlet, to the premiere of Bogie's new movie, Sabrina, co-starring Audrey Hepburn. I attended the premiere with the Bogarts, and I waved when I saw Jimmy, but he gave me only a wrathful look.

Jimmy later described his date with Terry to Lew and me as "a fucking bore. She just went with me for the publicity, and I don't know why in hell I let Dick talk me into it."

Among the tourists in the bleachers set up outside the theater for the premiere was Maila Nurmi. Born in Finland and thirty-two
